June 22: ‘Narasimha’ & ‘ATMA’ at the Ratha Yatra in Antwerp

On Saturday June 22 Samadhi is excited to present a preview of the new work ‘Narasimha’ as well as an excerpt of ‘ATMA‘ during the Ratha Yatra Festival at the Groenplaats in Antwerp, Belgium. Both dances will be performed by leading dancers of the company Vraja Sundari & Gaura Nataraj and include the beloved dance known as ‘Draupadi – Born of Fire’ created on the spectacular music track by Ananda Monet.

'Narasimha'

‘Narasimha’ gives expression to the epic ancient Indian story of the legendary Narasimhadev and his pure devotee Prahlada. Narasimha, an avatar of Vishnu who incarnates in the form of part lion and part man, is known primarily as the ‘Great Protector’ who specifically defends and protects his devotees from evil. The most popular Narasimha story is the legend that protects the 5-year old Prahlada, and creatively destroys Prahlada’s demonic father and tyrant Hiranyakashipu.

In the characteristic dance style of Samadhi consisting of contemporary ballet and yoga with influences of Indian classical dance and modern jazz movements, this legendary pastime is brought to the audience in an authentic and touching manner. The innovative choreography is carried out to music tracks by Gaura Vani, Kripamoya Das and Kishori Jani. ‘Narasimha’ takes the viewer on a dynamic journey through this timeless story of fearlessness, faith, selflessness and true servitude. The full evening performance is scheduled to premiere in the seasons of 2019/20 in collaboration with diverse artists from the UK and Russia.

'ATMA'

A POWERFUL FUSION OF SANSKRIT AND CONTEMPORARY MUSIC AND MOVEMENT

In 2015 Vraja Sundari is requested to create a dance performance for the album release of ‘Inevitable Time’ by female artist Ananda Monet (UK). This collaboration results in the mesmerising live music and dance performance ‘Atma’ (Sanskrit for ‘self’), a production based entirely on Ananda’s Mahabharata themed album, released by Radha Krishna Records.

‘Atma’ based on the album ‘Inevitable Time’ is an enthralling, dynamic journey into the epic Mahabharata. The dramatic story and timeless philosophical message is brought to life through powerful songs by Ananda and expressive choreography by artistic director and leader Vraja Sundari Keilman.
